Why Synergy is one of my favorite words.
Synergy is one of my very favorite words. I enjoy words and language very much so to choose a favorite at first seems to be challenging. But, over the years, the word synergy has risen to the top!
What is synergy? According to the businessdictionary.com, “A state in which two or more things work together in a particularly fruitful way that produces an effect greater than the sum of their individual effects.
Most businesses are service providers. It may at first seem strange to think of your art or craft as a service, and maybe you don’t, but that is how I have come to think of it.
When I created my Mission Statement, I faced this challenge. How can art be a service? What if you are a singer, musician, sculptor… what service are you providing when creating your particular creative art?
Hopefully, you have already created your own Mission Statement so that it can be part of your marketing and branding strategy and you have figured out what your particular creative endeavor does for mankind.
As humans, we are capable of unlimited great and beautiful things. Now, what if we combined our efforts? Can you just imagine what we are capable of if we work together, using our creativity, funds, and by brainstorming?
Being in business for so many years, I found that when I interacted with others that had the same goals, focus, and passions, I went much farther than when working by myself. Plus, it was a lot more interesting and inspirational.
Synergy And Symbiosis Between Clownfish And Anemones.
I have learned a lot about synergy by watching nature. Aren’t Clownfish adorable? They are a saltwater fish. I have never had one, but my son-in-law had a saltwater aquarium so I was able to watch this relationship up close. (You can read more about my freshwater aquarium hobby here).
There are over 1,000 anemone species that live in our oceans. When you look at them, it is hard to tell if they are plants or animals. Well, sea anemones are a group of salt-water-dwelling, predatory animals. There are only 10 species of anemone that enjoy a relationship with Clownfish. What is interesting is that within these 10 species, only select pairs of anemone and Clownfish are compatible.
This is where symbiosis comes into play. It means that each species is highly dependent on the other for survival. They provide a mutual protection from predators.
The Clownfish-anemone relationship is so interesting. The first thing the Clownfish needs to do is protect itself from nematocyst strikes. Nematocysts are harpoon-like stingers that anemones have on the end of their tentacles. As you might imagine, the anemone uses these tentacles to capture prey and ward off predators.
Most fish will try to eat the nutrient-rich tentacles. But, with the high probability of being stung while eating, the Clownfish is deterred from nibbling. In return, the anemone has evolved to not strike the clownfish.
The nitrogen excreted from anemonefish increases the amount of algae incorporated into the tissue of their hosts, which aids the anemone in tissue growth and regeneration.
What also makes Clownfish different is that it has a thick mucus layer that is three to four times thicker than what other fish have so if it is struck, it has a high level of protection. Over time, we have learned that this mucus can be mixed with the anemone mucus which helps the Clownfish create an even stronger barrier of protection.
Another benefit of this relationship is that the Clownfish has a safe and protective home within the anemone, it cleans the anemone, provides nutrients to the anemone in its waste, and it scares away predatory fish.
Can you see the analogy between the Clownfish and you as an artist and business owner? Can you, like the Clownfish, create a win-win scenario and find a safe place in the world or will you let fear win out?
Forming relationships that benefit each participant is the way of the Universe.
To Truly Succeed In Business, Create A Win-Win Scenario
This year, 2016, has shown us that a lot of people have a focus on “lack, or scarcity.” In their belief system, they see life as being limited, that there is only so much to go around. When they look at your attempt at success, and if they see that you might get your fair share, they perceive it as a threat; that they will receive less. They may even see your success as being unfair. This is “fear” based thinking. Is fear your reality? How did the little Clownfish and the anemone work this out?

I know many artists that trap themselves into thinking, “I’ll never sell my music, my photos, or my paintings because there are so many others out there doing the same thing.” What they don’t take into account is that YOU are U-nique! You are one of a kind! No one does it like you.
I still remember when I realized that I actually have no competition. Why? I am not arrogant, I don’t think I’m better than anyone else, I just celebrate my uniqueness. No one has had my life’s experiences, no one has my perspective or creativity because I am one-of-a-kind. Once you realize that this is true for you, too, your whole life can change.
If you put 20 photographers together and take them to a national monument and have them shoot photos for an hour, they will each “see” with their camera, something unique and different.
If you ask 20 painters to paint a particular still life, they will each see and paint it uniquely. Do you still believe that you have nothing unique to contribute? Is the Clownfish any less beautiful or less amazing than the anemone? Each creation, even by God and the Universe, is unique!

As I have stated many times, our thoughts are very powerful. I truly believe that we create our own destiny, our own success, and our own happiness.
Character Traits You Can Develop
Using synergy and having a win-win attitude you can develop these three vital character traits:
- Integrity: being authentic, being yourself, being true to your real feelings, values, and commitments.
- Maturity: being able to express your ideas and feelings with courage, and authenticity while having respect and consideration for the ideas and feelings of others.
- Abundance Mentality: coming from a perspective of abundance in the Universe instead of scarcity or lack. There is plenty of room for success for all.
If you are perceived as a person with these character traits, what do you think this can do for your business and sales?
Do not buy into the mentality of the negative people around you or on social media. What most people don’t know about me is that I am very easy to get along with, down to earth, easy to talk to. But as a business woman, I am strong and tough. I know my weaknesses and my strengths and when to use either one.
Depending on the circumstance people have experienced a relationship with me, they may either think in terms of either/or: either I’m nice or I’m tough. In order to create win-win situations, I think it’s important that you be both. You will find that you will have to learn to balance between being assertive with courage and consideration.
Author Stephen R. Covey has said, “(you) not only have to be empathic, but you also have to be confident. You not only have to be considerate and sensitive, you also have to be brave. To do that–to achieve that balance between courage and consideration–is the essence of real maturity and is fundamental to win-win.”
